Very disappointing. It’s over hyped from project runway. The atmosphere isn’t very welcoming and it’s hard to find fabric that isn’t of the higher priced range in the store.

Mood fabrics by itself is just about enough to justify a trip to NYC IMO. 3 floors of fabrics, from leather to suiting to linen to silk, plus tons of trimmings and buttons and notions galore. They don't stock quilting cotton, but other than that they pretty much have every kind of fabric you might want.

It's a bit confusing finding the store - look for the Brickell Arcade facade, then take the elevator to the 3rd floor.

You can find some good deals in store - I found a heavy cream silk I really like for $25 a yard and a bunch of their linens are also $25 a yard. You can find some pricey stuff there too. Staff are very friendly and helpful and not pushy. They all seem to genuinely sew themselves and I've overheard them give good advice to customers who ask questions.

Be aware that the in-store and online stores are basically entirely separate - the exact fabrics stocked and the rewards programs are totally different. I've had good experiences shopping online too, for what it's worth.

They have a bathroom in the back of the first floor. You bring your fabrics from a given floor all at once to that floor's cutting table - they'll cut it all and give you a stick on receipt. You can then check out the other floors and pay for it all at the end separately. Trimmings also have their own cutting desk. I tend to browse all the areas I'm interested in first before picking anything out to cut.

If going on a weekend, be sure to get there early to avoid the crowds.

I have frequented Mood over the years because of their wide selection (albeit expensive) of fabrics. However, after the way I was treated during my most recent visit to the store today, I never feel like coming back. I was harassed by the man at the door to check my bag because he claimed that it was “not a personal bag.” He allowed the person who walked in behind me to go in with a similar sized tote bag. I also noticed many other customers in the store with bags - including oversized tote bags and backpacks (see photo) - walking around without issue. I feel that I was discriminated against and this was an off putting start to my visit. Very disappointed. I hope that this discriminatory bag check policy and employee attitude gets changed.

Great Prices & Quality Fabrics — Lose Yourself in the World of Fabrics at Mood Fabrics

In 2019, I attended a fashion design course at FIT, and our professor recommended Mood Fabrics as one of our field trip destinations. We were instructed to pick fabric scraps there for our final projects. The store has everything you could possibly need or want for your designs—fabrics, buttons, and all kinds of decorative items for clothing. It’s truly a treasure trove. The prices are reasonable, and the staff provide excellent service. Every time I visit NYC, I make it a point to carve out time to stop by Mood Fabrics and pick up materials for designing clothes.

As an FIT student, I've frequented Mood many, many times. It's definitely an easier store to navigate than others in the Garment District and is reasonably priced (although you miss out on a lot of fabric options due to the way they are stacked on shelves). I like that Mood lets you buy fabric cuts under a yard; many places won't let you do that. They have an incredible variety of silks and special occasion fabrics as well as unique brocades and wool boucles. I will say, however, that their selection of knits is awful. They have an entire aisle dedicated to it on the first floor but 95% of the options are the worst quality, most transparent knits imaginable. If you're looking for cotton rib knit, cotton interlock with fun prints, or anything of that sort, your options are next to none. Also, the trim guy Noel is so mean for no reason. One time he snapped at me just for simply asking if they had a trim I wanted in white. He said "I don't KNOW, does it LOOK LIKE we have white?!" like a douchebag. He puts the mood in Mood, for sure.
